Qin, Guolin I am Guolin Qin. I was born in 1949, in Heilongjiang Province, China. From 1978 to 1981, I studied English and English literature in the Department of Foreign Languages of Shandong University as a postgraduate and got a master's degree. Since graduation, I have been teaching English and English literature to the seniors at Harbin Teachers University. I am now a professor of English, Dean of the English Department in Harbin Teachers University, and a director of the Chinese Society of English literature. My recent publications include "`Tom Jones'-A Model Novel of Critical Realism" published in Northern Forum in 1996, "The Word Order and Repetition of Word or Phrases in English Poetry" published in Journal of Foreign Languages in 1994, "The Canadian English Novels in the 20th Century" published in Northern Forum in 1994, "A Practical English Grammar" published by Heilongjiang People's Publishing House in 1993. "On Forsytism" published in Northern Forum in 1992, "A Brief Introduction to English Poetic Forms and Terms" published in Journal of Foreign Languages in 1990, and"On the Usage of Some English Words and Phrases" published in Journal of Foreign Languages in 1989," I am now doing some research on how to teach English as a second language and how to teach English literature to Chinese students, and I am especially interested in doing some research in Shakespeare's works ============================================================= *Quart, Abigail My best friend was Joseph Papp's assistant. When he would direct, occasionally she also became his production assistant. Then she would insist I read the play so she would have someone with whom to argue it. But I don't just read, I dig. Haven't been able to stop. My viewpoint is a poet's. And a playwright's. I know that poetic and dramatic logic are different, and Shakespeare used both with a breadth of mind that takes my breath away. Last week I began tugging at 'temple martlet' (Macbeth, I vi), pulling books off shelves all around me until (obvious amateur?) I knew that a martlet was the house martin, known for dwelling in salubrious environments, and a heraldic emblem. Whose shield is emblazoned with martlets? Most prominently, the Catholic Arundels, loyal supporters of Mary, Queen of Scots, English traitors. So: another nod to James from the mouth of Banquo, his reputed ancestor, by way of 'temple martlet.' And under the tribute, the warning that this fine dwelling holds traitors. Unnecessary for the dramatic logic, haunting in the poetic. Is cooing all evening over two words in Macbeth sufficient for your list? If I'm wrong about 'temple martlet,' there's no one nearby with interest enough to correct me, or argue the point. Failing published papers, would a short play produced at the Quaigh Theater do? Unforced Accord is a two-character examination of the day of King Hamlet's murder, the events leading to it, and the emotional reactions of Claudius and Gertrude, he to his crime, she to her sudden widowhood. Or a sonnet analyzing Desdemona? I am a source of information for so many New York performances of Shakespeare's plays. ============================================================= *Questad, Jeff I am a self taught student of Shakespeare. I am writing poetry and a couple of screenplays. My interest is primarily the "historical" plays (anything with Richard or Henry in the title) and of course the big tragedies, especially Hamlet and Lear. I hope the group is not limited to only acedemics and critics. I am sure I can contribute to the dialogue. =============================================================================== *Quick, Fiona C. I am a female, born 12/23/68 in Minneapolis,Minnesota to Welsh parents. I am a first generation American. I am currently a student at the University of Minnesota. I am enrolled in two Undergraduate degree programs in the College of Liberal Arts: Journalism-Advertising and Speech-Communications. I am a tenth year senior. Actually, I have been attending university off and on for ten years at the same time as working full time, but intend to finally complete both degrees in Spring of 1996. My interest in the Shaksper list is purely as a Shakespeare novice but enthusiast. As I live in Minneapolis, I have the opportunity to attend many Shakespeare plays quite often. I am also slowly, but surely, working my way through all of the plays, currently reading "Pericles" (my 19th play). Christine Mack Gordon, an English Instructor at the University of MN is responsible for reigniting my previous interest in the Bard when I took her class as an elective last summer. I have always enjoyed reading Shakespeare, but it was her class that truly inpired me to learn more. I would very much like the opportunity to lurk and learn from such a distinguished group on this list. =============================================================================== *Quick, Robyn Robyn Quick: I would like to join your list and gain access to the information you and your colleagues have compiled. In addition, I feel certain that as my research and writing continue I would be able to share scholarship that could be of interest to other members. I am on the theatre faculty at Towson State University, where I teach courses in theatre history an dramatic literature. My degrees include a B.A. in Theatre from Western Maryland College and an M.A. in Theatre from Kent State University. I am currently completing my dissertation for a Ph.D. in Theatre from the University of Michigan. Before achieving candidacy at the University of Michigan, I studied with John Russell Brown, taking several courses devoted specifically to Elizabethan theatre and the analysis of ShakespeareUs texts. Much of my research during this time focused upon the production history of ShakespeareUs plays. My dissertation explores Victorian theatrical interpretations of ShakespeareUs tragic heroines, looking specifically at the relationship between these performances and women's changing role in society. While writing my dissertation, I taught and directed at several local colleges including Western Maryland College and Catonsville Community College. I was also the Managing Director of a social issues theatre company which performed audience interactive works. Most of my recent presentations and publications have been on this topic. I have spoken at several college administratorsU conferences on the use of theatre in higher education and published a book review in Theatre Studies on the latest book by Augusto Boal. In addition, I have presented papers on contemporary theatre at the Kent State Theater Graduate Forum and at Center Stage in Baltimore, Md. =============================================================================== *Quick, Sterling D6 University Gardens Chapel Hill, NC 27516 (919) 933 7354 Born 6/21/74 am an undergraduate English and Philosophy major at UNC Chapel Hill. Have been an undergrad at Vanderbilt University as well, and personally understand the sting of lacking resources to pay for school. I am mostly interested in literature and theory and how the life, ideals, etc. of people, characters, and authors interact in various ways throughout the work. Currently have studied Shakespeare only cursorly, with works here and there throughout various classes. One interesting paper on liguistics and intonation in _Othello_, also some interesting plays in modern existentialist reactions to Shakespearen situations and plays. Want most to have access to a broader base of knowledge from which I can draw upon (as an undergrad) and later to contribute to (with graduate studies). At Vanderbilt Univ: member _Hustler_ newspaper staff editor of poetry _Versus Magazine_ =============================================================================== *Quin, Liam SoftQuad Inc. I'm not sure if this list & I are relevent to each other... My main related interests are in text retrieval/processing/formatting. (and Old English as a hobby...) I came across the list whilst seeking machine-readable texts! If I had a job title apart from "person in R&D" it would probably be something like Programmer & System Designer & Person Who Hates Shoes. I've produced a public domain (well, free anyway) text retrieval package, & am now researching query ranking and distributed vocabulary management (wow! long words!). Degree: Computer Science, Warwick (England) 1981-4) No interesting publications, I'm afraid :-( That's the trouble with working for small companies in England, which is what I've been doing until joining SoftQuad Inc. in Toronto. ======================================================================== *Quinta, Monique Name: Monique Quinta No title or department. I'm an actress who has always loved Shakespear. I live in Baltimore, MD. As an actress (as opposed to an actor) my opportunities to act in Shakespear is limited. I recently became a mother and that new role has consumed much of my time and energy. I am currently too old to play Shakespear's younger women and too young to play the older roles. For the past three years I have played a street character at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. There are many Renaissance Faires; however at ours we have a plot which is played out during the course of the day with the English court and the peasantry. This year King Henry VIII is married to Katherine Howard, his fifth wife. If you do not know the history, she was a teenager - estimates place her between 15 and 18 years of age. She was having an affair with at least one of Henry's courtiers. We also have a Thomas Culpepper and a Francis Denham who were the two men she was accused of sleeping with. There are five short played performed during the day where Faire patrons can learn of the plot and eventually discover the ending. In this case the young queen's infidelity is discovered around 4:30 in the afternoon and she and Thomas Culpepper and Francis Denham are arrested and taken away. In history the three of them loose their heads. But at the faire such matters are only alluded to. Two shortened versions of Shakespear plays are performed each year, but I have only had the pleasure of playing Ursula in Much Ado about Nothing two years ago. This year As You Like It and MacBeth are being done. Each are an hour long and I feel are welll done. Each weekend from late August until Mid October I dress in my costume and assume a much too modern version of english accent and hit the streets as Ursula Miller. The Faire is a wonderful place to work. The audience wanders from stage to stage watching bits and pieces of shows and then to the pubs for a bit of refreshment and back to the stages. As you can imagin the shows must be short (a half hour to forty five minutes) have an easy to follow plot line and performed in a dynamic matter to keep the attention of these patrons. I perform in 7 different shows this year andhave lines in 5. (The other two I lend my body to the crowd scenes.) I dance Scottish and Irish dances for two half hour sessions as well. With any of the time I have left I engage people out on the streets. This year I also wrote two shows for the Faire. One is called "The Royal Welcome". In it the Faire Welcomes King Henry and patrons discover the plot for the day. The Queen's infidelity is also uncovered in it. The other show is for childern and its called "Athelrid the Dragon". I have much experience as an actress. I have a degree from Saint Louis University. I've played an enormous diversity of roles and almost never the ingenune. I believe in Shakspear to be performed. I don't enjoy it when it is persented as poetry. It is full of life and should be done that way. I have a longing to start my own theatre company and do Lear as its premiere production. I know, it is rarely perfomed by even the finest companies but I have ideas. Current interest and research topics: well I love history and pick up whatever I can that pertains to Shakespear and that period. But motherhood has proven to be an all consuming subject and my life revolves around it. =============================================================================== De Kler, Randy Interest in Lifelong aficianado of Shakespeare's work. I enjoy Shakespeare: reading and performing in the genre. I have no formal training in the area. I am simply seeking to explore it at different levels. =============================================================================== *Quintanar, Margaret Margaret Quintanar: Several weeks ago I tried to subscribe to Shaksper and sent you the biographical information you requested. I have not received any correspondence as yet. Am I on the list or not? (I didn't have time to write a 500-word bibliography; I'm a graduate student; I have three papers due in the next 2 weeks). =============================================================================== *
