The (E)state of Women in Early Modern Drama
1999 Northeast Modern Language Association, Pittsburgh, 16-17 April 1999
As the title of the panel suggests, papers are sought that interrogate either the ontological "state" of female characters, or their estate or "status" in the sex/gender system of the day as represented by Shakespeare and his contemporaries in Early Modern dramas. Specifically, I am interested in analyses of the various forms of *power* female characters own (politically, sexually, or religiously) and bestow (via thrones, forgiveness, or marriage) upon male characters in plays written by male playwrights. Papers that focus on issues of female agency are also welcome.
