Sixth Annual Milton Convention
19-23 July 1999
The themes chosen for this symposium are Milton and the Civil War, Milton and Marvell, and Milton and the Millennium, but in practice papers on any aspect of Milton's life, work and context will be welcome.
Papers should be designed so that they may be delivered in twenty minutes. The Programme Committee now invites draft papers, or proposals for papers of about 500 words. In the latter case, the Committee may require to see the full text before making a decision. The deadline for submissions is 15 September 1998, though the Committee will welcome drafts and proposals submitted before that time.
The City of York is rich in historic buildings and historic associations. In the 17th century the King's Manor, now part of the University, was the seat of government for the North of England. The Civil War impinged on the City in many ways, most notably in 1644, when the siege of York was followed by the battle of Marston Moor. Several places of 17th century interest will be visited in the course of the Symposium, including Newburgh Priory (associated with Cromwell), Castle Howard, and - we hope -Appleton House.
The Symposium is being organised by Graham Parry of the University of York. The Chair of the Programme Committee is Nigel Smith of Keble College, Oxford.Details of booking arrangements will be circulated in due course. The estimated cost of the conference is £400. Draft papers and proposals should be submitted to Professor Graham Parry, Department of English, University of York, Heslington, York YO1 5DD, England. Fax 01904-433372.
E-mail enquiries should be addressed to gp8@york.ac.uk
